Viljandi Guitar Festival
To support the progress of a popularising art form – guitar playing, musicians Ain Agan, Robert Jürjendal and Aleksei Saks decided to come together and to show the Estonian people different aspects and ways to play this diverse instrument. Therefore, MTÜ Viljandi Kitarrifestival (NGO Viljandi Guitar Festival) was established and the first improvisational guitar festival took place in 2008.
The aim of the Viljandi Guitar Festival is to promote improvisational and stylistic guitar playing. During the festival, people may hear improvisational guitar players who represent different genres and get to know about different improvisational techniques and types of guitar. The event brings together guitarists from Estonia and abroad, thereat developing international cooperation concerning guitar playing. Workshops for students are also a vital part of the festival. The first half of the festival week is dedicated to students from different schools across Europe and Estonia, the other half is for the musicians.
MTÜ Viljandi Kitarrifestival gives out the annual Tiit Paulus Young Guitar Player´s Prize in order to help an outstanding young Estonian musician further his or her education in guitar playing. This prize has been already given to four young talented people. The festival wishes to continue giving out this prize in the future. The festival also wishes to carry on the tradition of the luthier day, where people can meet with the best luthiers in Estonia, admire, sample their instruments and get into different educational material concerning guitar playing.
The festival has featured many of our own best guitarists, as well as acknowledged performers from abroad. Viljandi Guitar Festival has gained interest with each year. Most of the concerts have taken place in Viljandi, which harmonises well with the festival´s atmosphere but some of the festival has made it possible to visit some of the concerts elsewhere as well. Viljandi Guitar Festival has showed people amazing and beautiful performances and special moments. Undoubtedly Viljandi Guitar Festival 2012 won´t be any different!
